The concept for Brew is to provide a subscription service in which anybody can have high-quality coffee beans delivered to their home or business. If a person does not live near a coffee shop that sells beans they like, Brew offers a solution to this. Alternatively, if someone wants to try a variety of different beans, whether they're new to artisan coffees or a coffee connoisseur, Brew is a good option. A user simply selects their preferences (type of beans, delivery frequency, and quantity of bags) through a brief, multiple-choice survey, and then Brew enrolls them in a personalized plan.

The challenge

Design a service and user flow that addresses the pain points often experienced with buying your own coffee beans. The service, Brew, creates solutions for the following issues: lack of quality coffee bean availability, uncertainty about taste preferences, the dreaded morning when you run out of coffee beans.

How can the service address quality coffee availability?

How can each user be matched with coffee they like?

How can we prevent people from running out of coffee beans?

The solution

Digital experience, personal delivery

People don't always live by a coffee shop — and oftentimes when they do, it's not one they like. Brew addresses this challenge. By filling out a short preferences survey, a person can be enrolled in a new coffee bean experience that is personalized to their interests. If a user is unsure what kind of coffee they're interested in, they can let Brew curate their experience with a mixture of different coffee bean styles. After enrolling, the user will begin receiving bags of coffee beans to their provided address.

Preferences survey

When signing up for Brew, a user is asked what type of beans interests them. They are given three options: "Traditional", "Modern", and "Mix it up". Each option includes a brief description, with stock images of applicable bags of beans, to suggest what one might receive. The intent is also to make people who aren't sure what they want feel comfortable with exploring the different options, while also providing people who have more strict preferences the ability to fine tune their selection — to be inclusive of people of all coffee experiences.

As a Brew subscriber tries new beans, they are able to update their preferences and receive beans more suited to their taste.

No more "no more coffee beans..."

The day has come. You wake up, roll out of bed to get ready for work, and first thing to start the morning: a cup of coffee. But...no coffee beans? 😱

This is a common issue for people who buy and grind their own beans. It usually means walking or driving to buy a cup or bag of beans elsewhere that day — or for people who don't have that option, no coffee.

Brew offers the ability to select a frequency at which to receive coffee beans — one that fits with a subscriber's coffee drinking habits. For those who are unsure, each option (weekly, twice monthly, and monthly) includes general guidelines.

Results

The initial prototype of the service and user flow is complete.

The subscription survey allows users to select their coffee bean preference, delivery frequency, and quantity of bags per delivery.

The user is then sent to an order summary screen, then shipping and billing details pages.

After additional user testing, one pain point with the quiz's current iteration is fine tuning the day of the month on which the bags of coffee beans are received — I am currently working on this.

The next phase is to also include the design of the account, menu and other pages.
